Musician sneaker collabs are hit or miss. Sometimes you get a half-hearted color swap with a name attached. Sometimes you get something that actually reflects the person. The VANSZA collection between Vans and SZA is the real thing.
Let me start with what Drop 1 includes. Two shoes. A Knu Skool Mule in black and white, and an Authentic in black and white. Both have SZA personal touches that go beyond a logo.
The Knu Skool Mule takes the bulkier skate shoe and turns it into a slip-on. The heel is removed. That is it. Simple change, big difference. The Knu Skool is already one of the more interesting Vans models in recent years, and turning it into a mule makes it more wearable for daily use. Black and white colorway. Clean.
The Authentic goes in a different direction. Worn-in finish. Fish graphics across the upper. The heel can be folded down, a detail based on how SZA actually wears her own shoes. She steps on the backs. Vans built that into the design. That is a personal touch that makes sense.
Drop 2 is where things get more ambitious. A new model called the LX Tabi Hiker. Low-top outdoor shoe with a split-toe shape. Cable laces. No traditional tongue. Rugged rubber sole that climbs partway up the sides. Colorways include blue, orange and green, brown and green, and black with red. This is Vans pushing into new territory. The Tabi Hiker does not look like anything in their current lineup.
The Knu Skool also comes back for Drop 2 in a RealTree-style camouflage. Between the mule conversion, the worn-in Authentic, the split-toe Tabi Hiker, and now a camo colorway, Vans is giving this collection real range across silhouettes. Four shoes, all different, all connected.
SZA said the collection is about instinct, creativity, and exploration. That sounds like the usual PR line, but the shoes back it up. The mule conversion, the fish graphics, the fold-down heel, and especially the Tabi Hiker all feel like design decisions made by someone with actual taste, not a marketing committee.
Drop 1 releases October 22, 2026. Authentic and Knu Skool Mule. Drop 2 arrives April 8, 2027 with the LX Tabi Hiker and camo Knu Skool.
Vans has been on a creative run lately, and the SZA partnership might be the best musician collab they have done. The Tabi Hiker alone is worth paying attention to. It is a new direction for Vans that I hope they keep exploring.
