The adidas Samba has been everywhere for the past two years. Every colorway, every collaboration, every retailer. It was only a matter of time before adidas started stretching the silhouette into new forms. The Samba Mule is the first real departure, and it makes more sense than I expected.
The concept is simple. Take the Samba. Remove the heel counter and collar structure. Leave everything else. What you get is a slip-on that still looks like a Samba from the front and sides. The low-profile shape is intact. The T-toe is there. The Three Stripes are there. The gold SAMBA lettering is there. It is recognizably a Samba even though the back half is gone.
The first colorway is clean. Off-white leather on the upper. Light grey suede on the toe. Black Three Stripes. Gold lettering near the collar. White laces over the tongue with a small gold Trefoil. Dark brown gum rubber sole. The color blocking is classic Samba. Nothing experimental, nothing loud. Just the original look in a new form.
From the front and side, you would be hard-pressed to tell it apart from a standard Samba unless you were looking at the back. That is the smart play. adidas did not redesign the shoe. They removed a piece. The result is a casual, easy shoe for people who like the Samba aesthetic but want something they can slip on.
Style code HP5050. Designed in women sizing. Release is scheduled for Fall 2026 through adidas.com and select retailers. Price has not been announced yet. Additional colorways are already in the pipeline for later in 2026.
Is a backless Samba something anyone asked for? Probably not explicitly. But the Samba has been so dominant that adidas needs to keep the line fresh without alienating the core audience. The mule is a low-risk way to do that. It does not replace the original. It exists alongside it. If you want to wear socks with your Sambas, the original is still there. If you want something for running errands in the summer or around the house, the mule gives you that option.
The slip-on trend is not going away. Crocs proved that, and plenty of other brands have followed. adidas turning the Samba into a mule is a logical move. The question is whether people will actually wear them or if they will just stick to the original. I think there is room for both.
