I have a soft spot for winterized Air Force 1s. Most people retire their AF1s around October and pull out the same beat boots until spring, and honestly that always felt like a waste of a good silhouette. The wheat colorway has been the go-to look for cold weather kicks since the late 90s, and this year Nike went ahead and built a GORE-TEX version of the AF1 Mid that actually backs up the look with real function.

The upper is genuine leather with a waterproof GORE-TEX finish, so rain, sleet and the slush pile at the end of every parking lot stop being a problem. Nike did not stop there though. They put a Vibram outsole under it, which is the same kind of rubber you find on actual hiking boots. The traction pattern on this thing is aggressive, all concentric lugs, and it grips icy pavement way better than a stock AF1 sole ever would.

The color blocking is what sells me. Wheat leather through the upper, black on the Swoosh and midsole, then a total orange outsole that just pops against the rest of the shoe. There is even a small gold AF1 mark on the midsole. It reads like a work boot that spent a weekend at a skate park, and I mean that in the best way. The buckle strap at the ankle is a nice touch too, it tightens the collar up against the cold.

These dropped September 20 for $180 at Nike, which is a $30 premium over a standard AF1 Mid, and for a waterproof boot-sole build I think that is fair. If you have been looking for one shoe that survives the entire winter without looking like mountaineering gear, this is honestly it. Sizes are moving in the usual range right now, so the resale premium is still small if you slept on the retail drop.
