Caitlin Clark getting a signature shoe is a big deal. Like, a really big deal. The last time Nike gave a WNBA player their own signature line was Sheryl Swoopes in the 90s with the Nike Air Swoopes. That was almost 30 years ago. So when the Nike Caitlin 1 was announced, I paid attention. And the “Racer Blue” colorway dropping October 1 is a strong first impression.
The shoe is a low top, which makes sense for a guard who moves like Clark does. The upper uses what Nike is calling Opticast, an engineered material where angular nodes change height across the surface. Those nodes form abstractions of Clark’s initials and her number 22 while also reducing drag. It is the kind of tech you usually see on a $180 basketball shoe, not a $140 one.

That is real performance tech. Air Zoom Turbo is the same cushioning system used in some of Nike’s top basketball shoes, designed for quick directional changes and explosive speed.
The outsole has some of my favorite details on any shoe this year. Phrases like “Shoot More Threes,” “From Anywhere,” and “It was never a long shot” are molded into the bottom. Those are tied to Clark’s career and the narrative around her game. It is personal without being corny, which is a hard line to walk.

Nike could have charged $180 for a signature shoe and people would have paid it. Keeping it at $140 makes it accessible to younger players who actually want to wear these on the court.
