The Air Jordan 16 is the most underrated shoe in the entire Jordan lineup. I said it. The shroud, the patent leather, the gaiter that makes it look like a completely different shoe when you take it off. People slept on the 16 when it dropped and they are still sleeping on it now. But the “Black Pack” colorway dropping October 3 might change some minds.
Style code is IZ2586-001 and the colorway is Black/Anthracite. That is it. No loud accents, no flashy color blocking, no gimmicks. Just an all black AJ16 that lets the silhouette do the talking. Retail is $240, which is on the higher end for a Jordan retro, but the 16 has always been a premium shoe with the patent leather and magnetic shroud system.
The 16 was originally designed by Wilson Smith III, taking over from Tinker Hatfield. It was the first Jordan to come with a removable shroud, or gaiter, that covered the laces and gave it a sleek boot like appearance. Strip the shroud off and you have a completely different looking shoe underneath. That versatility is something no other Jordan retro offers.
In the Black Pack, the shroud, upper, and outsole all go black. The Anthracite gives it just enough tonal variation so it does not look like a blob. The patent leather on the toe still catches light, which is the whole point of having patent on a shoe. If you are going to do an all black Jordan, the 16 is one of the best canvases for it because the material mix already creates natural contrast.
October 3 via SNKRS and select retailers. I expect these to sit. The 16 is not a hyped model. Most people will skip it and go straight to the Halloween 5 or the Forest Green 14 dropping later in the month. That is fine. Means you can actually buy these at retail without a bot army.
