Man, the Mambacurial is back. If you know Kobe sneakers, you know this one needs no introduction. The Nike Kobe 8 Protro “Mambacurial” drops September 19, 2026, and honestly, I think this might be the most anticipated Kobe retro of the year.
Let me take you back. The original Kobe 8 “Mambacurial” landed in 2013 and it was something different. Kobe Bryant loved soccer. I mean, really loved it. He grew up in Italy, followed the sport religiously, and the Mambacurial colorway was his way of mashing his two worlds together. The shoe borrowed directly from the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX football boot, one of the most iconic soccer cleats ever made. That bright, unapologetic color palette was a middle finger to the boring basketball shoe norm.
This is the first time the Mambacurial colorway has gotten the Protro treatment on the Kobe 8. For those who don’t follow the terminology, Protro is Nike’s word for taking a classic Kobe silhouette and updating the performance tech inside while keeping the look intact. Same beautiful exterior, better guts. The mesh upper is still there. The low-cut shape hasn’t changed. But the cushioning and build under the hood have been modernized.
The colorway is officially listed as Red Plum, Pink Flash, and Electric Green. That gradient from pink to purple across the upper still hits. The oversized Electric Green Swoosh running from the toe to the midfoot still looks like it was ripped straight off a Mercurial cleat. The “NIKE” lettering on the medial side in white. The translucent heel counter. The Kobe shield logo on the tongue with “KB24” underneath. It’s all back and it all still works.
What gets me about this pair is the outsole. Green translucent rubber with what looks like grass underneath. That is such a specific detail. It ties the whole soccer concept together without being cheesy about it. You look at the bottom of the shoe and immediately think pitch, not hardwood.
Style code is IO6253-500 for those who track that stuff. Retail price sits at $200 for adult sizes, with big kids coming in at $135. The release date was actually pushed back from an original August 8th slot to September 19th. Worth the wait in my opinion, especially with the FIFA World Cup happening in 2026. Perfect timing for a soccer-inspired basketball shoe to make its return.
Jalen Brunson has been spotted wearing these at his NY vs. NY Guard Camp. When an active NBA player is out there hooping in them before they even drop, that tells you the demand is going to be real. Nike typically produces fewer Kobe pairs than their mainstream Jordan releases, and this colorway carries serious hype. If you slept on the 2013 pair, this is your chance. I would not recommend waiting too long on SNKRS day.
The Protro update matters too. The original Kobe 8 was a great performer in its day, but shoe tech has come a long way in 13 years. The updated cushioning system makes these viable for actual on-court use, not just collecting. Kobe always wanted his shoes to be played in. That was the whole point of the line. The Mambacurial honors that intent.
What I appreciate about this retro is that Nike didn’t try to reinvent it. They could have changed the materials or tweaked the color blocking. They didn’t. The 2026 version stays faithful to the 2013 original. Same colors, same placement, same energy. The only real change is the performance upgrade underneath, which is exactly what Protro should be.
That said, $200 is not cheap. But for a shoe with this much history and this much cross-sport significance, it feels fair. The Mambacurial was never just another Kobe colorway. It was a cultural crossover moment. Basketball meets soccer, and the result was something neither sport had really seen before. That legacy holds up.
