Devin Booker has been carrying Kobe Bryant’s words with him for years. Now those words are making their way onto his signature shoe. The Nike Book 2 “Be Legendary” drops November 20, 2026, and the story behind it is one of the better player narratives Nike has built in a while.
The SKU is FZ7013-501. Color is Bright Violet, Black, and Wolf Grey. Retail is $145 in men’s sizing. But the details that matter here are not on the spec sheet.
The story goes back to 2016. Booker was a rookie, and Kobe was in his final NBA season. They faced each other on the court, and after the game, Kobe handed Booker a signed pair of Kobe 11s. On the shoe, Kobe wrote two words. “Be Legendary.” Booker held onto that message like it was scripture. He later worked the phrase into a Kobe 4 PE he wore during the 2021 NBA Finals, and then into a Book 1 PE a few years after that.
Now it is the Book 2’s turn. The purple color scheme is a direct nod to that original Kobe 4 PE Booker wore in the Finals. Lighter purple tumbled leather covers the lower part of the shoe. Darker ripstop takes over up top. A black patent leather Swoosh runs across the side panel, which is a material choice I did not expect. Patent on a performance basketball shoe is bold, but it gives the shoe a premium feel that matches the tribute concept.
More purple shows up on the laces, tongue, and textured sockliner. A grey speckled midsole sits underneath, finished with an icy translucent outsole. The speckling is a nice throwback to Kobe era aesthetics. Anyone who was collecting sneakers in the early 2010s knows that speckled midsoles were practically a Kobe signature detail.
Here is the catch though. The retail pair does not actually have “Be Legendary” text printed on it. Booker’s on-court version had the message on the lateral forefoot, but the public release leaves that space blank. The idea is that wearers can write the message themselves, which is a cool concept but also a little disappointing if you were expecting the text to be there out of the box.
The usual Book 2 details stay in place. “Chapter Two” runs down the heel pull tab. Booker branding sits on the tongue. The construction matches what we have seen from the Book 2 line so far, with the mesh layer around the tongue that differentiates the retail version from what Booker wears in games.
I think the purple on purple look is going to be polarizing. Some people will love the Kobe connection and the Lakers-adjacent color story. Others will find it too loud for everyday wear. Personally, I am in the first camp. The Bright Violet shade is vibrant without being neon, and the black patent Swoosh grounds the shoe enough that it does not feel like a purple blob on your feet.
The Kobe 4 PE that inspired this colorway has its own place in sneaker history. Booker wore it on the cover of NBA 2K23. That game shipped with the shoe visible on the cover, which means millions of people saw it before they ever knew the story behind it. Now they can own the spiritual successor.
At $145, the Book 2 is priced below the premium Jordan retros but above entry level Nike basketball. It sits in that sweet spot where you are paying for a signature shoe without going into collector territory. The “Be Legendary” theme adds enough narrative weight to make it feel special without being a gimmick.
