Converse SHAI 001 Shroud Shock: Shai Hides the Good Stuff Under a Zipper

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is building a signature line that actually has some ideas behind it. The Converse SHAI 001 Shroud “Shock” is the latest drop, and it does something that most signature shoes are afraid to do. It hides its best feature under a zipper.

Let me be clear about something first. This is the Shroud model, not the standard SHAI 001. SoleGrind already covered the “Spark” colorway, which is the base shoe. The Shroud version is a different build entirely. It adds a zippered cover that runs over the lacing system and gives the shoe a much smoother profile when fully closed. Think of it as two shoes in one. Zipped up, it is clean and minimal. Zipped down, it is loud and expressive.

The “Shock” colorway is almost entirely black on the surface. The upper uses different materials and finishes across the toe, side panels, and collar to create texture without adding color. Glossy black pieces around the heel stand out against the softer finish used through most of the shoe. The midsole stays black. From the outside, this looks like a tonal black basketball shoe. Then you unzip it.

Underneath the shroud is a neon green tongue and matching green laces. The contrast is immediate and sharp. You go from an all-black shoe to something with a burst of color that only you know is there. Black embroidery adds contrast on the green sections. It is a design choice that rewards the person wearing the shoe more than the person looking at it, and I think that is a cool approach for a signature model.

The outsole uses a full rubber traction pattern with a small green logo near the heel. That green logo is the only hint of color visible when the shroud is closed. It is a subtle detail, but it ties the whole design together. The style code is A23975C-004, and retail is $140. That is a fair price for a signature shoe with this level of engineering in the upper.

The release date is September 24, 2026, via SNKRS. Shai has been wearing different SHAI 001 models throughout the season, and the line is starting to develop a real identity. The standard model is a performance basketball shoe. The Shroud model adds a layer of personality. The zipper is not a gimmick. It changes how the shoe looks and feels, and it gives the wearer control over how much they want to show.

I like that Converse is letting Shai’s line experiment. The Shock colorway is the kind of release that makes you want to hold the shoe in your hand and play with the zipper. It is interactive in a way that most sneakers are not. If you have been sleeping on the SHAI 001, the Shroud version is worth a closer look.
