The Nike Mind 001 ‘Purple Smoke’ is one of the strangest shoes Nike has put out in years, and I mean that as a compliment. This slip-on style lands November 5 for $95, part of the new Mind series that blurs the line between a sneaker, a mule, and a recovery shoe. The nickname everyone keeps using online is the Mewtwo comparison, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.
The design is a one-piece purple knit body that flows over a sculpted midsole, with a padded collar that you slide into rather than lace up. There are no traditional laces, just a stretch entry that makes the whole thing read more like a tech-infused loafer than a runner. The Purple Smoke upper over Vast Grey and Silver Lilac accents gives it that soft, cloudy, almost psychic energy. Hence the Pokemon jokes.
What interests me is the positioning. Nike keeps experimenting with post-run and recovery adjacent footwear, and the Mind 001 looks like their most radical swing yet at a category that On and Oofos have been eating into. Whether this becomes a daily driver or a curiosity piece depends entirely on how the cushioning feels under an actual arch.
Early market signal is surprisingly strong for a weird shoe. StockX has the Purple Smoke asking around $174 against a $95 tag, and GOAT already shows it moving at a premium. Oddball silhouettes either flop instantly or become cult items, and the early data leans cult.
It releases through SNKRS and Nike on November 5 at 10 AM ET. I would not expect these to sit long given the conversation around them. The $95 retail keeps the risk low even if you end up only wearing them as house shoes.
