New Balance finally pulled the trigger on the 990v7, and the first Made in USA colorway drops November 6. Kool Grey over Calcium and Light Arctic Grey, style code U990GR7, $199.99 on newbalance.com.

The 990 is the most important shoe New Balance makes. Made in the USA since 1982, it built the dad shoe before dad shoes were a meme, survived every trend cycle by ignoring all of them, and became the official uniform of people who buy one excellent thing instead of six mediocre ones.

The v7 keeps the recipe. Pigskin suede, mesh, ENCAP cushioning, that instantly recognizable grey. The changes are in the refinement of the midsole shape and the upper pattern, a modernization that reads invisible from across the street and only shows up in the fit and finish. Which is exactly how the 990 audience wants it.

Kool Grey as the launch color is a statement. The 990 launched in grey, the v6 launched in grey, the v7 launches in grey. The brand knows better than to get creative with the origin story.

Expect these to be chronically sold out by January. New Balance keeps US production running but the Made in USA runs are always tighter than people expect. $199.99, November 6, newbalance.com and New Balance stores.
