Kevin Durant’s signature line with Nike has been one of the most consistently good performance basketball sneakers on the market, and the KD 13 keeps that streak alive. Nike officially unveiled the KD 13 in early April 2020, and honestly, it might be the best looking KD shoe since the KD 10. The design takes what worked on the KD 12 and refines it without reinventing the wheel.
The debut colorway comes in a clean black and white scheme with style code CI9948-001. The upper features a gridded nylon mesh in black that gives it a technical, performance-driven look. A large white Swoosh dips from the midfoot down into the midsole, creating a bold contrast that catches the eye immediately. There are also Dunk-like ankle wings on the collar, which is a nice nostalgic touch for Nike basketball fans.
Where the KD 13 really shines is under the hood. The cushioning setup is the headline feature here. Nike brought back the full-length Zoom Air Strobel from the KD 12, which essentially merges the strobel board and the Zoom unit into one component. This puts your foot directly on top of the Zoom bag, giving you a bouncy, responsive feel across the entire length of the shoe. But they didn’t stop there.
The KD 13 adds a second kidney-shaped Zoom unit in the forefoot, stacked beneath the full-length Strobel. This double-stacked forefoot Zoom setup is designed to encourage explosive movements off the ball of the foot. Think hesitation dribbles, step-back jumpers, quick first steps. That’s exactly the kind of playstyle Durant epitomizes, so the cushioning profile makes perfect sense. The KD 13 launched globally on April 6, 2020, with the North American release following on April 17th. Retail price was set at $160, which is actually pretty reasonable for a signature basketball shoe with this level of cushioning tech. Nike rolled out several colorways in quick succession after the debut black and white pair. The “Hype” colorway dropped on April 10th, followed by “Chill” on April 24th, “Home Team” on May 1st, and the “Bred” on June 1st.
There was also a “Planet of Hoops” colorway that released exclusively in Greater China on April 6th. That one’s worth mentioning because it shows Nike’s commitment to making the KD line a global product, not just a domestic one. Durant’s popularity in China is massive, and giving that market its own exclusive colorway makes sense from a business perspective even if it frustrates collectors Stateside.
What I like about the KD 13 is that it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. It’s a basketball shoe. It’s designed for a specific type of player. The tall, lanky, perimeter-scoring archetype that Durant embodies. The cushioning favors quick bursts and lateral movements over post-up grind. The upper is lightweight and breathable rather than bulky and protective. If you’re a guard or a wing player who relies on speed and shooting, this shoe is built for you.
The KD 13 didn’t get the hype of an Air Jordan retro or a Travis Scott collab, but that’s fine. It doesn’t need that kind of attention. What it needs is to perform on the court, and by all accounts it does exactly that.
