When Donald Glover announced his partnership with adidas Originals back in September 2018, nobody knew what to expect. The guy does music as Childish Gambino. He acts. He writes. He directs. He does a little bit of everything and somehow makes it all look effortless. So when the first images of the Donald Glover Presents collection finally dropped in April 2019, the sneaker world kind of paused for a second.
Three shoes. That’s what we got. The Nizza, the Continental 80, and the Lacombe. Three retro adidas silhouettes that most casual sneakerheads probably couldn’t name before this collab. And honestly, that’s what made it interesting.
The concept was simple but weirdly deep for a sneaker drop. Glover wanted shoes that looked like they’d already been lived in. Pre-worn. Scuffed up. Like your favorite pair that you’ve worn everywhere for two years straight. The canvas on all three pairs comes in this cream off-white colorway with frayed edges that are designed to unravel further over time. Inside-out golden eyestays. Hand-painted-looking three-stripe marks. Even a moth graphic on the heel bumpers and insoles as the symbol of the whole collection.
I think the frayed edges thing is what gets me. Most collabs try to make shoes look as clean and premium as possible. Glover went the opposite direction. He wanted them to look imperfect on purpose. To feel like they already had a story before you even put them on.
The Continental 80 might be the standout of the three. Style code EG1760, retail price $100. The colorway is officially listed as Off White/Grey Three-Cloud White. It’s got that classic 80s tennis shoe silhouette but the distressed canvas and deconstructed details give it this vintage, almost found-at-a-thrift-store vibe. The perforated three-stripe mark on the side is subtle enough that you might miss it at first glance.
Then there’s the Lacombe. EG1763, priced at $90. The colorway is Off White/Hi-Res Green-Cloud White. The Hi-Res Green shows up as a subtle teal accent on the laces and details. This is probably the least known silhouette of the three, which actually makes it the most interesting pick. You’re not going to see a ton of other people wearing these.
The Nizza is the most affordable of the bunch at $80, style code EG1761. Off White/Cloud White-Customized. It’s a canvas low-top with that classic Nizza rubber toe cap. The raw edges on the canvas are most visible on this model since the Nizza has that simpler, more stripped-down construction. Some of the campaign images showed the Nizza with paint splatters on the toe, which was a nice touch. Glover actually wore a painted-up pair himself in one of the promotional shorts.
All three dropped on April 26, 2019. They came in an inside-out adidas Originals box with a tear strip opening. Each pair included three sets of custom shoelaces designed to fringe with wear. So even the laces were part of the whole “evolve over time” concept.
Beyond the shoes themselves, Glover and adidas released a series of short films starring Glover and Mo’Nique, with a cameo from pro skater Na-Kel Smith. The vignettes showed Glover wearing the shoes through everyday stuff. Chopping wood. Avoiding fan selfies after a run. Just living in them. The whole point was that the scuffs and stains on your shoes aren’t damage. They’re evidence of your life.
That philosophy stuck with me. In a sneaker culture obsessed with keeping things icy and deadstock, Glover went the other way. He made a collection that’s designed to look better the more you beat them up. The moth symbol makes sense when you think about it. Moths are drawn to light. They’re fragile. They don’t last forever. Neither do sneakers, and neither do the moments you wear them through.
The collection launched through the Donald Glover Presents banner, which is Glover’s creative umbrella for all his collaborative work. Adidas Originals senior design director Chris Law said the aesthetic was driven by adidas’ history in classic sneakers combined with Glover’s appreciation for how shoes evolve with wear. That tension between heritage and personalization is what makes this collab different from the dozens of other adidas partnerships out there.
These weren’t hyped limited-edition drops with crazy colorways and outlandous designs. They were quiet. Understated. Three classic shoes with a lived-in look and a story to tell. Whether that resonates with you depends on what you want from your sneakers. If you want attention, look elsewhere. But if you want something that feels personal and gets better with age, the Donald Glover x adidas Originals collection is worth a look.
