When I first heard about a Vans x Led Zeppelin collaboration, I honestly thought someone was messing with me. Rock band collabs aren’t new in the sneaker world, but Led Zeppelin? That’s a different level of legacy. This collection dropped on February 22nd, 2019, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the band’s self-titled debut album. And Vans went all in.
The collection features two iconic Vans silhouettes. The Sk8-Hi and the Era. Both done up in black with Led Zeppelin’s artwork woven throughout. The Sk8-Hi uses suede and canvas uppers to showcase the album’s burning Hindenburg airship graphic printed across the quarter panels. Silver metallic hits give it a premium feel. Black leather Sidestripe, black tonal laces, and a tonal alphabet printed sidewall keep things understated despite the bold artwork. Red “LED ZEPPELIN” text branding on the side and a red tongue patch add that pop of color. The woven label on the internal tongue reveals each band member’s individual symbols. That’s the kind of detail that separates a real collab from a lazy logo slap.
The Era takes a different approach. Instead of the album art, it features an all-over print of each band member’s identifying icon. Jimmy Page’s “Zoso” sigil, John Bonham’s three-ring symbol, Robert Plant’s feather, and John Paul Jones’ triquetra. All printed in white across a premium leather upper. The midsoles get the oversized “LED ZEPPELIN” UV-printed treatment. It’s subtler than the Sk8-Hi but arguably cleaner. The kind of shoe that works with anything in your rotation.
Both shoes come packaged in custom Vans x Led Zeppelin shoeboxes. The boxes themselves are collector’s items with the distressed airship artwork and red LED ZEPPELIN lettering alongside the Vans logo. I’ve seen people keep these boxes empty on shelves. That tells you something about the level of presentation here.
Beyond the footwear, the collection included a commemorative trucker hat and a long-sleeve tee. The tee showcases the original album artwork while the hat features the airship graphic. Nice touches for the complete package, though I’m here for the shoes.
The Sk8-Hi retailed for around $90 while the Era came in at about $75. The collection was available at select Vans retail stores, wholesale partners, Vans.com, and the Led Zeppelin online store. Given that this was a limited time release, most sizes sold through quickly. Resale has settled in the $130 to $160 range depending on the model and size, which isn’t terrible for a collab with this much cultural weight.
What I appreciate about this collab is that Vans didn’t just slap a logo on a shoe and call it a day. The Sk8-Hi’s album art placement, the Era’s symbol print, the custom boxes, the internal tongue labels. Every detail ties back to the band’s history in a meaningful way. Vans has a history of music collabs that runs deep. From Iron Maiden to Metallica to the Beatles, they’ve built a catalog that no other sneaker brand can really match in the rock space. The Led Zeppelin collection sits near the top of that list. Fifty years of one of the greatest rock bands ever, captured on two of the most recognizable skate shoes ever made. That’s a winning formula.
