Jordan Brand kicked off 2019 with something I wasn’t expecting. They took the Air Jordan 1, the silhouette everyone and their mother is chasing, and gave it a fresh concept. They called it the “Defiant” line, and the first colorway to drop was the “Couture.” Honestly, when I first saw the leaks, I didn’t know what to think. But once the official images hit, I was sold.

Jordan Brand drew inspiration from the craftsmanship behind luxury Italian sports cars. That red slash across the Swoosh is like a racing stripe. It’s bold. It’s aggressive. And it works better than I thought it would.

Let’s talk about the build. The upper is premium black leather throughout. Toe box, eyestays, ankle collar, heel. All black, all smooth, all clean. Then you get hit with that massive red panel slashing across the midfoot where the Swoosh normally lives. It’s not just a colored Swoosh. It’s a full red leather panel with a glossy embossed Swoosh layered on top in a slightly deeper red. The edges are stitched in a way that looks almost hand-applied. That’s where the “Couture” name comes from. It’s supposed to feel crafted, not mass-produced.

The tongue keeps things classic with a red “Nike Air” woven label on a black padded tongue. Flat black laces. The Wings logo on the ankle is debossed in black, so it’s subtle. You almost miss it against the black leather. I kind of love that. No need to scream when the shoe already talks loud enough.

Now the sole. This is where things get interesting. Instead of a clean white midsole or a icy blue outsole, Jordan Brand went with a muslin-colored rubber. I think the muslin works here because it balances the aggressiveness of the red slash. It tones things down just enough. The outsole features the standard Air Jordan 1 circular traction pattern, also in muslin.

Pop the insole and you get a bright red interior with a silver “Nike Air” logo. A nice hidden detail that you only see when you’re wearing them or flexing them on the ‘gram. Little touches like that matter. They show someone was thinking about the shoe as a complete package, not just the exterior.

The “Defiant” concept is interesting. Jordan Brand positioned this as a new sub-line within the AJ1 family. The idea is that each Defiant colorway takes the Banned theme and pushes it somewhere new. The Couture is the first, inspired by luxury car craftsmanship. Later we’d see other Defiant colorways like the White/Black/Gym Red/Tour Yellow and the SB collabs. But this one started it all.

I think what makes the Couture work is that it doesn’t try to be the OG Bred. It doesn’t try to be the 2016 Banned. It’s its own thing. The red painted stroke is a callback to the Banned colorway without literally copying it. It’s a nod, not a reissue. And for a shoe that retailed at $175, the materials feel like they justify the price. The leather is thick, the construction is solid, and the muslin sole adds character.
