When Sony Pictures and Jordan Brand linked up for the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse release, I do not think anyone expected the shoe to be this good. The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Origin Story” dropped on December 14, 2018, the same day the animated film hit theaters. It was one of those rare movie collabs that actually respected the source material on both sides.
The concept is simple but brilliant. Take the Chicago colorway, which is already one of the most iconic AJ1s ever, and give it a comic book makeover. The red leather panels get covered in this halftone dot pattern that mimics the animation style of the movie. Up close it looks like tiny printed dots. Step back and it reads as a glossy red finish. That texture is what separates this from a regular Chicago retro.
The rest of the shoe stays true to the Chicago blueprint. Black Swoosh on a white base. Black ankle collar with the Wings logo stamped in black. Black laces over a white tongue with the Nike Air tag in red. The midsole is clean white. But Jordan Brand added one more Spider-Verse detail that pushes it over the top.
The outsole. Instead of the standard red or clear rubber, the Origin Story gets a translucent icy blue sole. It is a subtle nod but it changes the whole vibe of the shoe. That blue tint catches light differently and gives the AJ1 a slightly futuristic feel that fits perfectly with the multiverse theme of the film.
The SKU is 555088-602 and the colorway is listed as Gym Red/Black-White-Photo Blue. That Photo Blue is the icy sole color. Retail was $160, which felt fair for what you were getting. This was not a quick cash grab collab. The design had real thought behind it.
In the movie, Miles Morales wears a pair of AJ1s that get scuffed up as the story progresses. Jordan Brand made the smart decision to not just replicate a screen-used shoe but to create something that captures the spirit of the character. The halftone dots reference the animation style. The icy sole references the Spider-Verse energy. The Chicago base references Miles sneaker preference. Every detail connects.
The release was limited. SNKRS had it, select retailers carried it, and it sold through fast. If you were not quick on the SNKRS app that morning you were out of luck. Resale climbed to around $400-500 in the weeks after and has held steady since. The Origin Story became one of those shoes that people who bought it do not want to let go of.
What I appreciate most about the Origin Story is that it works as a standalone shoe even if you know nothing about the movie. You could wear these and never mention Spider-Man and nobody would question it. The halftone texture just reads as a premium finish. That is what makes it one of the best movie collabs Jordan Brand has ever done. It honors the source without being costume-y.
